Food Safety
Food to be sold in Germany has to meet general standards set by law. Vendors do not need special permission as long as their merchandise does not damage consumers' health. Still, manufacturers, importers, carriers and retailers are responsible for the food they put into circulation.
Many standards in food hygiene have been harmonised in the Single European Market. Detailed information is available from the "Health and Consumer Protection" Directorate General of the European Commission.
In Germany, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety is responsible for all matters involving food, especially monitoring of food.
Furthermore, the Federal Institute of Risk Assessment deals with food safety.
