Safety Markings

There are various safety markings, which have established a good reputation in the German and European Market. Though their use is voluntary, they are useful as marketing strategy. For a large number of products the GS-marking is available, which has a history of more than 20 years.

For electrical products the triangular VDE-logo has achieved a good reputation. It is awarded by the VDE Testing and Certification Institute, which is by order of Germany's Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) and therefore a neutral and independent institution.

Several industry-specific labels are seen on the German and European Market. Few of them are compulsory, but they might ease entering the European Market. Careful research on the reputation will help to identify the quality of the label as a tool for marketing.

An overview of GS is available from TUV's website. The VDE-mark for electrical appliances is described by the awarding VDE-institute.
