The German market for medical devices ranks third behind the USA and Japan. The spectrum of used technologies in this area is broad: electrical engineering/electronics, precision mechanics and optics. In addition, technologies from the textile industry, the plastics processing, the pharmaceutical and recently from the biotechnology industries are applied.

The following information is a summary of the most relevant associations, databases and studies in the healthcare market in Germany:

Eucomed is the voice of the medical technology industry in Europe. The alliance represents 4500 designers, manufacturers and suppliers of medical technology used in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and amelioration of disease and disability. Small and medium size companies amount for more than 80% of this sector. Eucomed is active in market data collection, research and innovation projects as well as in international affairs.

The German Association of Biomedical Engineering works to promote the development and application of innovative medical technologies. Physicians, scientists and engineers work closely together in the DGBMT to facilitate the use of advanced technologies for diagnostics and therapy. The DGBMT organizes initiatives, projects and events to support promising activities like micro- and nanotechnologies in medicine and life sciences.

BVMed, the German Medical Technology Association, represents about 200 manufacturers and service providers of medical devices. As a trade association, BVMed promotes and represents the combined interests of the medical technology industry and trade companies. Users can download several documents, e.g. the BVMed Annual Report 2006/07 which depicts the market conditions for medical technology in Germany.

The Data Basis Research by DIMDI, the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information, offers access to about 70 databases with approximately 100 million documents.Hospimed publishes information data bases in the health service area with manufacturers and suppliers in Germany. These data bases are available as printed media, on CD-ROM and online.
