Wind Energy Industry
At the Forefront of Producing Clean Energy
Industry Overview
The wind energy sector in Germany has been a global leader in the production of clean energy. Its contribution to electricity generation in 2009 was the largest among all renewable energies. Despite the current economic situation worldwide, the German wind energy market has remained stable in the past years and has even registered an increase in the number of new wind farm construction sites. However, wind power generation in 2009 did not reach the amount produced in 2008 due to the below average wind conditions. Still, the German wind energy market has much potential yet to be exploited. According to the German Wind Energy Association, BWE, Germany could reach an overall capacity of 55,000 MW (45,000 onshore and 10,000 MW offshore) by 2020. This would generate enough wind energy to cover 25 percent of Germany's demand for electricity.
