Industry Overview
Germany's automobile industry is one of the key sectors in the country. Cars and automotive parts are among the country's top export products and are known for their premium quality, safety and environmental friendliness. Germany is the world champion of automotive patents with an average of 10 new registrations per day. According to the National Association of the Automotive Industry, VDA, the sector spent almost 20.9 billion Euros (4.4 percent more than 2008) on research and development in 2009.
However, a recent study from Price Waterhouse Coopers shows that German carmakers and suppliers expect the production of components and final assembly to migrate to other countries. This indicates that suppliers will participate even more in the development and manufacturing of vehicles.
