Checklist: Contents of a Commercial Invoice
According to German Sales Law (Umsatzsteuergesetz (UStG) 2003) commercial invoices should contain:
- name (company) and address of seller and buyer
- place and date of issue
- number, kind, sign and consecutive number of packages
- precise description of articles (usual trade description in terms of nature of goods, quality grades etc.)
- volume or quantity in common commercial units
- invoice price (cif-value)
- terms of delivery and payment (incoterms)
- indications about the goods' country of origin and (where applicable) country of purchase or shipment
Additionally, invoices for shipments from within the EU require the following information:
- the VAT ID number of both buyer and seller
- by dual-use goods: a written indication that export controls apply, if the product is to subsequently be exported outside the EU
