Checklist: Supporting Documents for Customs Declarations
| Document Type (German equivalent) | Document is used for: | |
| _____ | commercial invoice (Handelsrechnung) | all customs activities |
| _____ | certificate / declaration of origin (Urprungszeugnis/ Ursprungserklärung) | imports of products labeled 'U' in the German import list as well as some products to be re-exported. These documents are issued by a competent authority in the country of origin. |
| _____ | community transit declaration, community transit document for establishing the community nature of the goods, single administrative document (SAD) (Versandanmeldung, Versandpapier, Einheitspapier) | transit shipments of goods between EU member states that go through a non-EU country. |
| _____ | movement certificate (Warenverkehrsbescheinigung) | trade with all EU countries as well as those with which the EU has a preferential arrangement. This document is also used for food products caught by German ships. |
| _____ | waybill (Internationaler Frachtbrief) | shipments via train. |
| _____ | Carnet (ATA, CPD or TIR) | both transit and temporary importation purposes in lieu of a deposit on the customs value of the goods. More details on carnets and the issuing authorities in your country are available from the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Road Transport Union, and the UN Economic Commission for Europe. |
As the choice of valid forms of supporting documents depends on the goods imported, the country of origin and the value of the imported goods, please be sure to contact a customs expert and/or the German Customs Administration to be sure which ones apply to your specific case.
